Today is St Dwynwen’s Day (25 January), named after the Welsh patron saint of lovers.

The day is filled with heartfelt gestures and love, but Dwynwen’s own story, as believed, was actually incredibly tragic.

The legend says that she fell in love with a gentleman named Maelon Dafodrill but daughter of a king, she was already promised to another.

Dwynwen prayed that she would fall in love with Maelon, after which an angel provides her with a potion to forget about Maelon and he is turned into ice.

God then grants his three wishes. Dwynwen demanded that Maelon be released; that, through her, God would watch over all true lovers; and stay single. All have been granted.

In gratitude, she then retired to the solitude of Ynys Llanddwyn off Anglesey, devoting her life to the service of God, until her death.

To get in the mood for this annual day of love, the Leader asked readers to name their Welsh celebrities. Do you get a mention?

From the world of entertainment, there was Wales’ sweetheart, singer Katherine Jenkins, Torchwood and Keep the faith star Eve Myles, Come dance strictly pro Amy Dowden, lead singer of Stereophonics Kelly Jones, Gavin and Stacey star Ruth Jones, actor/activist Michael Sheen and Wrexham’s own Mark Lewis Jones.

Sports stars also received a few nods, including rugby’s Leigh Halfpenny and the late Gary Speed.

But legendary singer Tom Jones and actor Luke Evans got the most mentions.

No matter who you spend the day with, whether it’s your other half, a celebrity crush, or yourself, may there be a moment of love.

This is what Dwynwen would have wanted.
