Following his string of performances at Harlem’s Apollo Theater, Drake responded to Erykah Badu’s praise on Instagram.
It was a love party between Duck and Erykah Badou on Instagram Stories on Monday, January 23. Following Drake’s career-long performances at Harlem’s Apollo Theater over the weekend, Badu took to her Instagram Stories where she reposted a Okplayer review of one of Drake’s shows, which called him “the voice of a generation”.
Badu agreed with the statement, writing “Because he’s @champagnepapi” in his caption.
After seeing the repost, Drake responded in his own Instagram Stories with, “My Eternal Spirit Animal has spoken,” followed by a set of emojis.
The Canada native held back-to-back concerts at the Apollo Theater on Saturday (January 21) and Sunday (January 22), which were originally scheduled for last year. During the shows, Drake released 21 Savage, Lil Uzi Vert and rap veterans Harlem Dipset, with DJ spots from Drake’s OVO Sound team.
Drizzy has shown his love for Badu over the years, dropping the R&B singer’s name in his 2019 single “Days In the East,” even surprising his son, Seven, with an appearance at his school.
On his 2015 mixtape But you can’t use my phoneBadu covered the rapper’s hit “Hotline Bling” on the remake “Cel U Lar Device,” also using 6 God “soundalike” ItsRoutine, legal name Aubrey Davis, on the project.
The same year, Badu opened up about his friendship with Drizzy in a Complex interview.
“He liked it…we’re friends,” she said. “I don’t know how to define that. Kind of like when you have good chemistry with someone. You like the same kind of music. You like the same kind of movies… I think our friendship is slow. There’s a lot of time to experiment with the music and all that.
“I think once I did the Drake song, ‘Hotline Bling,’ I did it for someone’s birthday, just as a present,” Badu added. “And it went so well, my co-producer, Zach Witness and I, who are on my label, we just kinda messed with it. And you know there’s no instrumental for the song , so he had to recreate and reconfigure all those things.
