The Black Dirt Theater returns with a dinner theater featuring “I love you, you’re perfect, now change!” from February 3 to 11 at the Hastings Arts Center.

After the triumphant return to the stage with “Newsies! in 2022, Black Dirt Theater strives to continue to bring vibrant, lively and fresh theater to Hastings. The next stage of the organization is a brand new dinner theater experience at the beautiful Hastings Arts Center, with catering provided by Ideal Catering by Hastings Golf Club and Events.

The production is the second longest-running off-Broadway revue in history and has been revised for the 21st century. This celebration of the mating game tackles the truths and myths behind this contemporary conundrum known as “the relationship.”

Through sketches and songs, Act I explores the journey from meeting and waiting to love and marriage, while Act II reveals the agonies and triumphs of in-laws and newborns, trips in the family car, and pick-up techniques of the geriatric set.

With The Onion Grille, their longtime host, shutting down for good, Black Dirt Theater had to find a different stage to perform “I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change!”

“We were sad to hear that The Onion Grille was closing,” said Thomas Bonneville, Vice Chairman of the Black Dirt Theater Board of Directors. “Black Dirt Theater and The Onion Grille have shared a great partnership over the past 10 years to provide the community with a fantastic dinner theater experience, and we wish Wendy and everyone at The Onion Grille the best!”

The Hastings Arts Center was a perfect and familiar alternative for the Black Dirt Theatre.

“The Black Dirt Theater has always been good at rotating, and we have enjoyed residency at a number of locations around Hastings, including Leduc Manor and Historic Town Hall.” Bonneville continued, “The Hastings Arts Center has hosted our improv troupe for a few years, and of course the space is acoustically wonderful, so we contacted the Lockwoods and secured it for a dinner theatre.”

Shortly after, it was decided that Ideal Catering by Hastings Golf Club and Events (Home of the Hastings Public House) would supply the food for the evening shows. To offer a discounted ticket for the morning of February 5, a dessert-only option will be offered.

This production features a brand new director at Black Dirt Theatre, Christian Unser. Christian is thrilled to make his directorial debut with Black Dirt Theater’s production of “I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change.”

Middleschool.

Typically, this show is played by only 4 players, but to provide some extra opportunities for our volunteer cast, Black Dirt has chosen “I love you, you’re perfect, now change!” with a fresh and young cast of 6 artists from Hastings and out of town.

Sammi Penick, Rachel Schmidt, Katy MacCutcheon, Sam Verdick, Connor Dean Burrell and Tom Kleis. While our three ladies are new to Black Dirt, our three men were last seen in the summer production of “Newsies!”
