The All India Council for Technical Education has adopted the Creative Commons License which will help make its study materials easily accessible to Indian and foreign students.

A Creative Commons license is one of many public copyright licenses that allow the free distribution of an otherwise copyrighted “work”. It is used when an author wishes to give other people the right to share, use and develop a work that he has created.

The license was adopted in accordance with the UNESCO resolution of November 25, 2019 (Paris, France) on open educational resources (OER). “It also makes AICTE study materials now compliant with open educational resources, which not only respects the intellectual property rights of the copyright holder, but also provides releases granting the public the right to access, reuse , to reuse, adapt and redistribute educational materials,” AICTE President TG Sitharam said in a statement.

“Currently, the license has been passed for second grade books uploaded on e-Kumbh portal in English as well as other Indian languages. Going forward, the remaining second grade books and the third and fourth grade books, in English as well as 12 other Indian languages, will also be released under license,” he added.

Sitharam said that this decision will allow millions of Indian and foreign students to access the quality materials developed by AICTE for their studies and teaching in the classroom. “This will allow others to copy and redistribute the material in any medium or format, to remix, transform and build upon the material for non-commercial purposes,” the president said.

AICTE had launched a Technical Book Writing Program in 2021, in line with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, to provide engineering course materials in 12 different Indian languages ​​– Hindi, Odia, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Punjabi, Bengali, Marathi, Gujarati, Assamese, Urdu and Malayalam.

AICTE had started writing an original book in English for the first year and then translating it into 12 Indian languages, after original writing, in line with its model curriculum and outcome-based education model.
